Side by Side Teaching Strategy
I learned about this strategy from Bob Wendal at a professional development session years ago. Annette Brown helped me own it.
The push back then was to get writing into all classes.
How I started?
--Putting problems side by side grouped in types & have
the kids write about differences & similarities.
--Then pair share.
What sold me?
--On day 1, I got almost DOUBLE the amount of problems
in than ever before.
-More problems = more confident kids :)
--My more advanced kids were getting through the more
challenging problems at the end of the board.
-We RARELY got to them before Side by Side.
What has it turned into over the past 4 years?
--Comparing differences and similarities has lead them
into next steps without me telling them.
Remind you of anything???
--Over the years more & more I have began to create
these guiding "scaffolding" lessons.
Please note...
--This is not much different than what you already do.
-Just taking the problems you have in your lessons
already & putting them side by side on the boards so
they can all be seen at the same time.
--It has taken me years to get my lessons like this.
-Some come easy, some are harder.
--Every lesson looks different.
-Some are very scaffolded.
-However, some are designed to get the most amount of
examples in as possible.
Both for better understanding & confidence.
Please come and see me teach anytime you would like.
