Teaching With a Weebly Website
Like a Boss
MUHSD has requested that all teachers have a "web presence." This can mean a lot of different things. We're here to assist you in organizing a plan for your website and seeing it come to fruition. Your website should be useful while reflecting your classroom and your personality as a teacher. Creating a website can seem daunting, but our team has some great ideas to get you started and we look forward to helping you create a dynamic web space.

Objective
Participants will use Weebly to construct a lesson for their class.
The Basics
|
The tutorial goes over the basic steps of creating a weebly site. The video was originally posted on YouTube and then embedded into the website. This is a very quick and easy process! The implications for this are many:
The beauty of creating a website is that you can embed material for students who need extra help, or for students who need enrichment. Don't be afraid to add in MORE information to help and engage all students! Finally, notice that the website allows you to create two columns so that you can have a video or presentation next to a narrative or set of questions. |
Before We Continue: Pair-Share
How would you rate your Weebly proficiency? What have you done with Weebly thus far? What would you like to accomplish by having a Weebly website? Finally, what are some things that make you nervous (or excited!) about using a website as a teaching tool?
Vocabulary: To Link vs. To Embed
When you embed content, students will see content from another area of the internet WITHIN the webpage. Students will not leave the webpage to access content.
Most people embed videos, presentations, and images from other sources. In order to embed, you need to copy and paste the embed code from the other website. You can find the embed code by looking for the embed symbol shown to the left. |
When you create a link, students will click on the link and be directed OUTSIDE of the webpage for content. Student will leave the webpage to access content. You have the option setting it so the page will open in a new browser window or the one they are currently in by toggling a check box.
In order to create a link, you must follow some instructions. You may create a link using texts or using an image. The link symbol is the chain shown to the left. |
Checking for Understanding
Take a moment with your handout and think about when you would embed things versus when you would link them.
When would you embed items? What are advantages to embedding items?

Adding a PresentationPresentations are a great way to embed information that your students need. Instead of using the presentation for the entire lesson, a website allows you to create a presentation for only the most important information.

Adding a Google DocumentThe beauty of adding a Google document is that you only ever need to put it in once. Gone are the days of uploading new documents every time you make a change.
It works the same way adding a presentation. The only difference is that you have to information about the width and height to the embed code. You can see to the left an example of an document that has been embedded. The piece you need to add to the code is highlighted in yellow. Play with the pixel numbers until you get the document to look how you want. |
Adding a YouTube Video
Reading, Anyone?
A Weebly website can become the central hub for your instruction. If there is something you want your students to read and respond to, link it to the website! When students are absent, they will get into the habit of routinely checking your website and getting the readings done. Soon the days of "What did I miss?" will be a thing of the past!
It is very easy to link articles to your website. This is an article from US News and World Report about the positive impact technology has had in classrooms. As you are reading the article, please make a copy of and fill in this worksheet to collect and organize your thoughts.

Adding Creative Commons Licensed Images
Remember that our websites are public. Anything you put up needs to be your own creation or creative commons/open source or you are opening yourself up to legal issues. If you do not know if an item is creative commons licensed, you must assume that it is copyrighted.
Luckily there are some great ways to include Creative Commons licensed images are not just aesthetically pleasing but also instructive. They can be used to balance the design and/or be used to illustrate vocabulary. Beautiful images are now available for us to use at Getty Images. These two images were embedded into this website. Note that credit is given below each photo. This is automatic with the embed code.
